Pillow positioning for side sleepers

Are you a side sleeper? Then you have to watch this video!

Boy, oh boy, do I have some tips for you. Here are some of my favorite ways to prop up the body when side sleeping. In these videos I’m going to show you a lot of different things that you can do and it may seem overwhelming, so just know you can use as many or as little to help you sleep most comfortably. Remember, only you know your body best, so try out these different tips and keep what feels good for you.

One of my favorite things to do is to place a thin pillow, or folded blanket under my rib cage. Because our shoulders tend to be more broad than the pelvis, this helps create space for the bottom arm.

  • Make sure your head pillow is nicely wedged in the space between the shoulder and the base of the neck. Also, make sure that your pillow is thick enough (but not too thick) that you have a neutral c-spine. Have a partner or friend take a look at this for you when you lay down if needed.

  • Support the hips by placing a pillow under the top leg, all the way from knee to foot. I prefer to extend my bottom leg straight and place my pillow slightly in front with my top leg resting on it. Although if it’s more comfortable place the pillow in between the knees, just make sure it’s long enough to support all the way to the foot and thick enough that your leg is in line with your top hip.

  • Lastly you can try wedging a small pillow under your back so that you can lean towards it, placing your weight onto the shoulder blade, versus placing your weight directly on your shoulder. Feel free to use the above tips with one as well, I just didn’t show this in the video

Let me know if the comments if you plan on trying out any of these tips tonight and as always be sure to share with a friend!
